Maintenance Superintendent

Position Overview

Under direction of Plant Manager and through participation on and with the plant leadership team, the plant Maintenance Superintendent is the primary person responsible for maximizing plant uptime. The Superintendent is ultimately responsible for providing plan capacity assurance at the lowest possible total cost through a skilled, productive maintenance workforce and by supplementing with contractors when needed. This position is also responsible for plant wide utilities operation as well as energy consumption. 

The Superintendent plans and directs activities for the maintenance organization and develops a long-range strategy, establishes standards, and improves, maintains, and repairs facilities and equipment to ensure optimal reliability and lowest life cycle cost. The Superintendent must also work to ensure compliance with all applicable federal state, and local regulations. The Superintendent must lead and drive the continuous improvement efforts that impact plant reliability and conversion cost.


  • Schedule and plan maintenance work for mechanics and contractors
  • Coordinate mechanics and boiler operators work, vacation, and call-in coverage schedules
  • Optimize the departments work processes, systems, and methods
  • Provide labor allocation reporting to Accounting
  • Track and publish standardized maintenance and performance metrics
  • Manage the maintenance work planning function and the maintenance scheduling function
  • Develop and implement planning and scheduling standards and procedure for the plant
  • Define and manage the training needs for maintenance personnel and develops an associated training plan
  • Manage the plant utilities operation and budget
  • Manage the preventative maintenance program
  • Manage the plant maintenance budget and associated spending
  • Manage the planning and execution of scheduled plant shutdowns and turnarounds


  • 5-8 years experience working in a manufacturing facility required, 8-10+ years preferred
  • Experience managing direct reports required
  • Experience in a worked in a unionized facility required



  • Bachelor’s Degree in maintenance engineering, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering required
