Summary of Job Function
Supervises, coordinates and participates in activities of employees performing routine, standardized biological and/or biochemical tests, as well as more complex procedures on blood that assist physicians in the diagnosis and clinical management of patients. Assumes responsibility for recognizing results or problems that require referral to Medical Director or Laboratory Director/Manager. Performs additional tasks as requested by the Chair of Pathology or his/her designee.
Please note this is an evening shift position with hours of operation 3pm-11pm.
Job Functions
Oversee all the assigned laboratory sections.
Prepares work schedule for the section ensuring proper distribution or assignments and adequate staffing, space and facilities for the performance of duties. Demonstrates to staff and trains staff on newly approved methods to implement as standard procedures. Manages staff in the section including interviewing, hiring, orientation, training, evaluation and discipline. Ensures appropriate departmental orientation/training of new and old employees in safety, infection control, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Right to Know Walk Through, OSHA Blood borne Pathogens (Safety Manual, Infection Control Manual. Maintains personnel safety records and investigates product recalls.
Provides leadership and technical oversight of the section.
Determines acceptability of specimens; resolves discrepancies with laboratory personnel, residents or pathologists. Maintains positive identification of specimens throughout processing and testing. Performs documents and evaluates required quality control procedures; documents corrective action taken or reason for accepting out-of-range results; Section Chief of any persistent problem or situation requiring additional actions. Maintains quality control program; updates procedure manual as required. Assists Section Chief in Quality Assurance/Improvement activities evaluating pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of laboratory testing. Prepares reports and analyses indicating progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Supervises and participates in the performance of laboratory procedures including but not limited to processing specimens, testing and resulting. Consults with Section Chief or pathologist to plan priorities or work to be completed each day when needed. Provides technical assistance, instruction and consultation to staff members and personnel for the resolution of technical problems. Assists in ensuring compliance with standards of accreditation by JCAHO ,AABB and CAP. Assists in ensuring compliance with safety and infection control policies and procedures. Reviews Procedure Manuals on a yearly basis. Recognizes situations that must be brought to the attention of the Chief of the Section, Laboratory Director or Chairman of Pathology.
Contributes to the department and medical center s financial health through monitoring of expenses; equipment and supply maintenance; forecasting future technological advances.
Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment for laboratory use. Exercises care and attention to equipment to prevent loss due to downtime of equipment. Performs and evaluates new testing procedures and submits reports to Section Chief suggesting changes to increase sensitivity, specificity and reliability of test procedures; draws conclusion and makes recommendations regarding new test procedures. Assists in implementing the control and effective utilization of the physical and financial resources in the department. Assists in the capital and operating budget process.Monitors staffing levels.
Special Skills/Equipment
Constant decision-making involving a high degree of resourcefulness, initiative and careful analysis to deal with changing day-to-day matters. Meets on regular basis with the direct reports ( supervisors and staff) in regard to the activities of the section/department. May work weekends and off-hours as determined by the needs of the department.

Job Qualifications
-Bachelor degree in clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical biological or equivalent to the requirement of a technical personnel qualification based on CLIA and CAP.
-Minimum of 5 years of experience in area of responsibility
-ASCP or AMT certification preferred
-Excellent communication skills ( verbal and written)
-Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint required
