Scientist – Microbial Physiology & Biochemistry (US)

BioConsortia is seeking a microbiologist to join its R&D team in Davis, California.

This position will become an essential part of the microbiology team which is focused on discovering, characterizing, and optimizing microbial strains for use in agriculture.

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research on microbial trait characterization, mechanisms of action, and plant-microbe interactions and contribute to the operation and technology expansion of the microbiology platform, and will work closely with the company’s microbiology, genomics, strain engineering, plant biology, and fermentation teams.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Designing and implementing microbiology, physiological and biochemical experiments/assays in microbial trait discovery, mode of action, and strain evaluation platforms.
  • Developing and carrying out assays designed to elucidate plant-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions.
  • Keeping high quality records for documentation and writing technical reports for internal and external presentations/interpretations.
  • Collaborating with a cross-interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and research associates to deliver on a variety of goals including internal and external collaborations.
  • Supporting a safe, organized, and respectful work environment.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and knowledge:

  • PhD in Microbiology or Biochemistry with focus on microorganisms; or MSc in Microbiology or Biochemistry with minimum 4 years of experience.
  • Expertise and experience in conducting research experiments in microbial physiology and biochemistry.
  • Hands-on experience in in-vitro and in-situ microbiology assays and in using analytical instrumentation.
  • High level of competency in isolation, culture, and biochemical understanding of environmental microbes.
  • Experience in the study of microbe-plant interaction is desirable, but not essential.
  • Working knowledge of molecular biology including rt-QPCR, RNA and DNA extractions, and microscopy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well with internal teams and contract research organizations.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
