Associate General Counsel

The Weichert Companies is one of the largest independently owned real estate services companies in North America. Among other things, its companies provide commercial and residential real estate, mortgage, title insurance and insurance brokerage services as well as franchise opportunities. As Associate General Counsel, you will join an experienced team of attorneys who help the business enterprise grow and thrive. The Associate General Counsel position provides support and recommendations to the General Counsel in areas of real estate, financial services, including title and homeowner’s insurance, and mortgage lending and commercial financing, employment law and other general corporate law matters.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advise, draft and negotiate employment agreements, franchise agreements, financing and security agreements, real estate contracts and leases, and other transactional agreements.
  • Strong understanding of federal and state laws and rules related to employment, franchise, real estate, real estate brokerage, title insurance, real estate settlement services, and federal law relating to affiliated business activities in the residential real estate context.
  • Ability to monitor multi-state regulatory requirements and analyze legal and regulatory issues in areas of employment, real estate, mortgage lending and commercial financing, and assist with developing related policies and procedures.
  • Ability to oversee and manage claims, litigation, and outside counsel.
  • Experience interacting with and presenting to C-Suite executives, senior management, regulators, or other internal or external stakeholders.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple time-sensitive matters.
  • Provide support and recommendations to the General Counsel in areas of real estate, financial services, including title and homeowner’s insurance, and mortgage lending and commercial financing, employment law and other general corporate law matters.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and provide risk-appropriate legal solutions to further the business.
  • When evaluating risk and determine priorities, have the ability to provide pragmatic solutions-oriented advice, and guidance on a range of topics, including regulatory compliance, transactional, and employment matters.
  • Be both self-sufficient and a team player with the skill to know when to ask questions versus when to take the initiative to find solutions without input or assistance from others.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment and successfully manage multiple projects and aggressive deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working in a cross-department, cross-functional role requiring good client relationships.
  • A desire to grow and add to your skill set by expanding beyond your area of specialty.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have the following:

 

  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Actively licensed to practice law in New Jersey.
  • 5-7 years’ relevant legal experience as a practicing attorney or as in-house counsel.
  • Experience interacting with and presenting to C-Suite executives, senior management, regulators, or other internal or external stakeholders
  • Experience with Thomson Reuters Legal Tracker (Serengeti) or similar case management system, and Microsoft 365
  • Understanding of the real estate settlement services and residential real estate brokerage industries preferred
  • Ability to use excellent judgment on behalf of the Company
  • Commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards and unquestioned integrity
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in public and private settings with diverse audiences
  • Ability to translate complex legal issues for a lay audience
  • Strong leadership, people management, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with a diverse population
  • Substantial specialized legal knowledge in real estate and real estate brokerage federal and state law relating to affiliated business activities in the residential real estate context
