GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Accessions, an Accessioner is responsible for the receiving and triaging of all patient specimens. Efficiently and accurately assigns each specimen an accession number. Enters all pertinent patient, sample, test and facility information into the LIMS database.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Learns and follows the established standard operating procedures for sample handling, reporting of results to team leads, supervisors and managers, and record-keeping.
2. Receives and triages patient specimens.
3. Assigns each specimen an accession number and creates a patient chart.
4. Enters patient information into LIMS database, with strict adherence to HIPPA laws.
5. Transports all accessioned specimens and tracking sheets to the DNA extraction team and/or cell culture team, as appropriate.
6. Label patient documents with barcode and scan patient charts through OnBase.
7. Perform accurate internal checks of all specimens and patient charts accessioned for the day.
8. Perform sample send-outs when needed.
9. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance, takes authorized corrective action, and notifies key individuals.
10. Accurately records and maintains all temperature and humidity logs.
11. Adhere to quality control policies and documents all quality control activities.

Competencies
Mathematical, computer, reasoning, and language skills at the professional level.
Education and/or Experience
High School diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biology, or related science field OR or 2-3 years of college with 1-2 years related, progressive experience as an accessioner is preferred. Able to work successfully and productively in both a team environment and independently. Attention to detail and accuracy are critical.
